The Sulkusalmi strait connects Tervajärvi to Kymi. From there the water flows through Myllylampi and Emäntälahti all the way to Luujärvi. Sulkusalmi is on the border of the restricted military area, and the trail here is on duckboards. The strait is a part of the Kaakkurin kierros trail.

The name Sulkusalmi (block strait) is believed to come from the times when it was used for timber rafting. The foundations of an old rafting house can be found at the southern end of the strait.
