On top of the Mustalamminvuori hill is a sightseeing tower, the oldest structure made for visitors of Repovesi. It was built in the 1960s at the request of the Valkeala council by pioneers from the local garrison. The nearby Vekaranjärvi garrison was built around the same time.

Mustavuori (black mountain) got its name from the dark-coloured rock wall which you can see best from the Kuutinlahti bay or from the shore of the Mustalampi pond. The dark colouring originates from the rain and the runoff waters falling on it for thousands of years. The tower is one of the highest points of the park at 130 meters from the sea level.

There is an amazing view from the top of the tower. In the southwest you can see the Ruskiasalmi strait. From there the Kuutinlahti waters get narrower and narrower until opening again into the large Repovesi. Everywhere around you are surrounded by great rocks and forests. The opposite Ruskiasalmi is in a private nature conservation area owned by Woikoski Oy. There you can find the Löppösenluola cave with ancient rock paintings. They are not very well preserved, but in the right circumstances you can see a hand print and a falling man or an elk.

To the northwest of the tower, above the tree line, you can see the highest rock wall of the Olhavanvuori hill. At Olhavanvuori you can see the forestry history of the area. The last felling was in the 1970s, and you can clearly see the differences between the old and the new forest. Here you can also see how nature heals itself.

There are two routes to the tower. One goes between the Kuutinkämppä rental cottage and the Mustavuori tipi-like hut and up the hill. The trail is rocky and can be slippery when wet. Make sure you follow the orange markings carefully because if you miss one, you might have to come back a few steps to find the trail again.

The other trail to the tower takes off from the shore of the Mustalampi pond. This route is much steeper, but also shorter than the other one. It’s always worth it to climb to the top of the tower. The view is always breathtaking, whether it’s at dawn, noon or dusk, all year around.
